How to Grow a Mango Tree from Seed

By MMA Farms··8 min read read

Growing a mango tree from seed is Among the most rewarding gardening experiences. Based on what we see in our orchards, in Multan, every tree in our orchard traces its lineage back to carefully selected seeds and grafts. We have listed how you can grow your own mango tree at home.

What You Need

  • 1 fresh mango seed (from a ripe mango you just ate)
  • Paper towels or potting soil
  • A sealable plastic bag or small pot
  • Warm location (25-30°C / 77-86°F)
  • Patience — this is a multi-year journey

Step 1: Extract the Seed

After eating a ripe mango, clean the husk (the large flat pit) thoroughly. Using a knife or scissors, carefully cut along the edge of the husk to open it. Inside you will find the actual seed — a lima-bean-shaped kernel. Remove it gently without damaging it.

Tip from our orchards: Use a Sindhri or Chaunsa seed — these are polyembryonic varieties, meaning one seed can produce multiple sprouts, some of which are genetic clones of the parent tree.

Step 2: Germinate the Seed

Paper Towel Method (Recommended)

  1. Wrap the seed in a damp (not soaking) paper towel
  2. Place in a sealable plastic bag, leaving it slightly open for air
  3. Store in a warm, dark location (top of refrigerator works well)
  4. Check every 2-3 days and re-moisten the towel if dry
  5. A root and shoot will appear in 1-3 weeks

Direct Planting Method

  1. Fill a pot with well-draining potting mix
  2. Plant the seed 2cm deep with the concave side facing down
  3. Water thoroughly and keep soil moist (not waterlogged)
  4. Place in warm location with indirect light
  5. Sprout appears in 2-4 weeks

Step 3: Plant the Sprouted Seed

Once your seed has a root (5-10cm long) and a shoot:

  1. Prepare a pot (at least 30cm diameter) with well-draining soil
  2. Mix: 60% potting soil + 20% perlite + 20% compost
  3. Plant with the root pointing down and shoot above soil surface
  4. Water gently and place in bright, indirect sunlight
  5. Gradually introduce to direct sunlight over 2 weeks

Step 4: First Year Care

MonthWhat to Do
Month 1-2Keep soil moist, indirect sun, no fertilizer
Month 3-4Introduce direct sunlight (4-6 hours), begin light fertilizing
Month 5-6Water deeply once a week (let soil dry between waterings)
Month 7-12Full sun (6+ hours), monthly balanced fertilizer, protect from cold

Step 5: Growing Years (Year 2-5)

  • Year 2: Repot to a larger container (50cm+) or plant in ground if climate allows
  • Year 3: Tree reaches 1.5-2 meters. Begin pruning to shape
  • Year 4: Tree may start flowering (grafted trees) or continue growing (seed-grown)
  • Year 5-8: First fruit production from seed-grown trees

Common Problems

  • Seed rotting: Too much water. Let soil dry slightly between waterings.
  • No sprouting after 4 weeks: Seed may not be viable. Try another.
  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or nutrient deficiency. Reduce water, add iron-rich fertilizer.
  • Leggy growth: Not enough light. Move to brighter location.

We our oldest trees were planted from seeds by the previous generation. Some of these seed-grown Chaunsa trees are now 50+ years old and produce the sweetest fruit in our orchard — proof that growing from seed, while slow, can yield extraordinary results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to grow a mango tree from seed?

A mango tree grown from seed takes 5-8 years to produce fruit. Grafted trees produce in 3-4 years. The seedling will sprout in 2-4 weeks, reach 1 meter in the first year, and become a small tree (2-3 meters) by year 3.

Can I grow a mango tree from a store-bought mango?

Yes! Any fresh mango seed can be germinated. However, the resulting tree may not produce fruit identical to the parent — it could be better or worse. For guaranteed variety, use grafted saplings. But growing from seed is a fun, rewarding experiment.

What is the best method to germinate a mango seed?

The paper towel method is most reliable: remove the husk, wrap the inner seed in a damp paper towel, place in a sealed plastic bag, and keep warm (25-30°C). The seed sprouts in 1-2 weeks. Alternatively, plant directly in moist soil 2cm deep.

Can I grow a mango tree indoors?

Mango trees can be grown indoors as ornamental plants in large pots with good sunlight (6+ hours). However, indoor trees rarely produce fruit due to insufficient light and space. They make beautiful tropical houseplants though, with glossy leaves.

What climate does a mango tree need?

Mango trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They need temperatures above 10°C (50°F), ideally 25-35°C during growing season. They cannot survive frost. USDA zones 10-11 are ideal. In cooler climates, grow in containers and bring indoors in winter.
