About Langra
Langra is one of the earliest mango varieties to arrive each season, prized for its unique tangy-sweet flavor profile that sets it apart from all other Pakistani mangoes. Unlike most mangoes, Langra retains its green skin even when fully ripe — the telltale sign of ripeness is a slight give when gently pressed. Originating from the ancient mango orchards of the subcontinent, Langra has been cultivated for centuries and remains a favorite among mango connoisseurs who appreciate its complex, aromatic flavor. The flesh is a vibrant golden-yellow with minimal fiber, making it exceptionally smooth and perfect for eating fresh.

Did You Know?
Langra gets its name from a legend about a lame (langra) saint who first cultivated this variety centuries ago in Varanasi.
Storage Tips for Langra
Room Temperature
Keep unripe Langra mangoes at room temperature (25-30 C) until fully ripe. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes as cold stops the ripening process.
Refrigerated
Once ripe, store at 12-15°C for extended freshness. Ripe Langra mangoes last 5-7 days at room temperature.
Ripeness Check
Gently press the mango — a ripe one gives slightly. You should also notice a sweet aroma near the stem when it is ready to eat.
Pro Tip
Wrap individual mangoes in newspaper and keep in a ventilated area for even, natural ripening. Avoid sealed plastic bags.
Where Langra Mango Is Grown
Langra cultivation is concentrated in a handful of regions across Pakistan, each producing fruit with slightly different characteristics.
Multan, Punjab
MMA Farms grows Langra across the older orchard blocks of our Multan land. The variety thrives in Multan's hot-dry summers and the alluvial soil of the Chenab basin. Multan-grown Langra ripens 7–10 days after the original Uttar Pradesh orchards, extending its availability into mid-July.
Rahim Yar Khan & Bahawalpur
Southern Punjab's Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur districts produce a slightly smaller, more aromatic Langra. Fruit from these areas often appears in markets a few days before Multan stock and is preferred by buyers who want maximum tang in the flavour balance.
Historical origin — Banaras / Varanasi
The variety originated in the orchards around Banaras (Varanasi) in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. The story most commonly told is of a 'langra' (lame) sadhu or gardener who tended the first known tree of this variety in the 18th century. Cuttings travelled across the subcontinent over the following 200 years.
The History of Langra Mango
Langra is one of the oldest documented mango varieties on the subcontinent, with a propagation history stretching back at least 250 years to the orchards of Banaras (now Varanasi) in present-day Uttar Pradesh. The name comes from the Urdu/Hindi word for 'lame' — local tradition holds that the original tree grew in the garden of a man who walked with a limp. After Partition in 1947, grafted Langra material was widely planted across the new Pakistani Punjab, especially around Multan, where the variety adapted exceptionally well. Today Langra is grown across both India and Pakistan, with Pakistani Langra generally considered the more aromatic of the two due to Punjab's drier summers.
How to Identify a Real Langra
Pakistani markets sometimes mis-label varieties. Here is how to be sure you are buying genuine Langra.
Skin colour when ripe
This is the giveaway. A fully ripe Langra stays GREEN on the outside — it does not turn yellow or golden like most other varieties. If a vendor shows you a yellow mango and calls it Langra, it is either a different variety or has been artificially colour-treated.
Size & shape
Medium round-oval shape, 250–350g per fruit. Slightly flatter on one side. Smaller than Sindhri but larger than Anwar Ratol.
Flesh
Bright golden-yellow flesh with very low fibre. Slightly firmer texture than Sindhri or Chaunsa — Langra holds its shape well when sliced, making it the preferred variety for chutney and pickle.
Aroma
Strong citrus-tinged fragrance, unlike the pure-sweet aroma of Sindhri or the floral aroma of Chaunsa. The citrus note is one of the easiest ways to identify Langra in a blind test.
Taste check
A real Langra has a distinctive tangy-sweet flavour — never purely sweet. If the mango tastes only sweet with no tang, it is not Langra. The balance of sweet and slight sourness is the variety's defining feature.
Langra vs Other Mango Varieties
Choosing between Pakistani mango varieties is largely about texture, aroma, and season. Here is how Langra compares.
Langra vs Anwar Ratol
Both are early-season Punjab varieties but the eating experience is opposite. Langra is medium-sized (250–350g), green-skinned, with a tangy-sweet balanced flavour. Anwar Ratol is small (150–250g), yellow-skinned, with intense aroma and pure sweetness. Langra is better for cooking and slicing; Anwar Ratol is better for raw eating in the choosna style.

Both are old-line northern subcontinent varieties. Dussehri is slightly more elongated, sweeter, and lacks Langra's signature tang. Dussehri is dominant in Indian markets (especially Lucknow); Langra is dominant in Pakistani markets. If you want pure sweetness, pick Dussehri; if you want the tangy-sweet balance, pick Langra.
Read full comparisonLangra vs Sindhri
Langra arrives first (mid-June), Sindhri follows a week later. Sindhri is purely sweet, larger (350–500g), and turns golden when ripe. Langra is tangy-sweet, medium (250–350g), and stays green when ripe. Many Pakistani families buy Langra first to break the seasonal fast, then switch to Sindhri for sweetness.
Langra Mango Price in Pakistan (2026)
Langra is one of the more affordable premium Pakistani varieties because it is the first to arrive each season and is widely grown. Retail prices in 2026 range from PKR 350–550 per kg depending on grade and arrival stage. The first 7 days of the season carry a 20–30% premium as buyers compete for the earliest fruit. MMA Farms 5kg gift boxes are priced at Rs. 2,550 (Rs. 510/kg) and 10kg boxes at Rs. 4,050 (Rs. 405/kg), with free nationwide delivery. Langra is also the variety most commonly bought in 20kg crates for home pickle-making — wholesale rates available on request.
